The extract is derived from the fruits of Garcinia cambogia belonging to family Clusiaceae. Vilayti imli as it is commonly known, is an exotic fruit grown in south India, and the leaves of this creeper are used as one of the most potent agents to counteract diabetes and also benefited in the treatment of obesity. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, the flavors of Garcinia cambogia are said to activate digestion and are used as purgatives, in the treatment of worms and parasites, tumors and dysentery. The major phytoconstituent is Hydroxycitric acid. This principal acid has been found to suppress the fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, food intake, and promotes glycogenesis, gluconeogenesis and induced weight loss.
